How to Go to a Gym If You're Shy

I grew up as a single child in a fairly remote area of Colorado. And if it was not enough isolation, my dear mother at home taught me. So if you think you're shy as a child and shy as an adult, to the point of not being able to join a gym because you're too shy, believe me, you're not alone .

As I matured, I learned a lot about myself. And one of the most important lessons I have just realized is that we have to do what is right for us, follow our passions and not let our concerns about other people oppose.

And that's why being shy should not stop you from joining a gym.

I discovered that there are Three steps to being able to go to a gym to exercise, even if you have social anxiety and I think you are too shy to go through the door.

1/    To register, visit your local gym for a rest period.

Usually it is the middle of the morning between 10am and 12pm. But if you are incredibly shy and do not want to try things out, drive several hours and a few days to see what time the windows have the fewest cars in the parking lot.

Once you choose a good time, enter the main purpose of your registration. And worries later on. Because recording is the most important step.

2/     Dress for comfort, not for others.

Take your time to choose an exercise equipment that you feel very comfortable with, and do not worry about what others will think of you. Maybe you feel better with long pants or maybe all black. Anyway, if you are too shy to join a gym, you will find that once you put your comfort above any perceived judgment, you will be much happier.

Some boards that worked for me wear rather loose clothing (I even wore my husband's sweat pants) and in colors that do not stand out. You will never find me in pink, purple or bright blue. I also keep my hair in a group to keep it in my forehead, but not in ponytail, because I like the safety of being able to hide behind my hair.

3/     Concentrate on yourself, not on others.

It can help you listen to music on a personal device. Let yourself "enter the area". Whether you're on the elliptical in the corner or working on carpets close to others, you'll be in your own space, enjoying the songs that inspire you. This will keep you focused on what is happening in your own world, and the rest of the gym can fade into the background.

Believe it or not, after about four years of going to my local gym, I started a local walking group with friends that I did there. And we welcome newcomers all the time. It was nothing I foresaw. However, the quick glances and the fact that the same people over the weeks lead to hellos. And hellos can lead to longer exchanges. This can evolve into knowledge and friendships.

I was probably the most shy person in the gym, and I never thought I could be part of it. I'm healthier and stronger than I've been in my 50's. So, do not let shyness slow you down. Go for what you want.
